微软今天宣布了一套专为高性能计算(HPC)领域设计的集群服务器操作系统“Windows HPC Server 2008”，并同时放出了第一个Beta公开测试版。另外微软还发起了一个并行计算项目“Parallel Computing Initiative”，意在开发一系列跨越多核心桌面和集群的通用开发工具。

如果Windows HPC Server真的比Linux更便宜，那我们会看到Windows大量部署在超级计算机中。 但情况并非如此，当在世界上规模最大最快的超级计算机上运行时，Windows还远远谈不上超过Linux，世界超级计算机500强榜单显示，只有5台超级计算机使用了Windows。
