In British RP pronunciation, we use the schwa /ə/ more than any other sound. It’s the lazy little vowel that shows up in all the right places — banana, support, today, about. In RP British pronunciation, the letter R often vanishes when it comes before a consonant sound, or when it’s at the end of a word, and it’s replaced by a vowel sound instead. This means “years” becomes /jɪəz/, “carefully” turns into /ˈkeə.fəl.i/, and “lower” transforms into /ˈləʊ.ə/.
