Possibly over 3800 years old, this sphinx is attributed to the Middle Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, during the 12th Dynasty. It is made of gneiss and features Senwosret III depicted as a sphinx. He is wearing a nemes headdress and cobra emblem. The statue measures 42.5 x 29.5 x 73 cm (16 3/4 x 11 5/8 x 28 3/4 in) and weighs 114.3 kg (252 lb). This statue is now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, United States. It was purchased in Cairo from Maurice Nahman and gifted to the museum

The statues of Senwosret III show the king standing in a devotional pose, wearing a headcloth and a pleated kilt. Protective cobras rise on his forehead, and more rearing cobras frame the beaded strip down the front of his kilt. His royal names are carved on the belt and on the back pillars.
