As a Union burial detail was burying bodies after the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, they made a startling discovery near Cemetery Ridge. Among the bodies covering the ground from one of the Confederate attacks during the battle was the body of a dead woman wearing the uniform of a Confederate private.
